Book vs exchange: what is the difference?
On a traditional book (bookmaker market), the platform sets the rate and you can only bet on an outcome happening. On an exchange, players are matched with each other: one player backs an outcome and another lays it. The exchange simply matches the two sides and may charge a small commission on net winnings.
Your Mahakal Exchange ID gives you both. You can use the bookmaker market for fast, fixed-rate bets and switch to the exchange when you want better odds, want to lay a favourite, or want to trade out of a position while the match is live.
Exchange terms every Mahakal ID user should know
| Term | Meaning | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Back | Betting that an outcome will happen. | Profit = stake × (odds − 1) if it wins. |
| Lay | Betting that an outcome will not happen. | You win the backer’s stake; your risk is the liability. |
| Liability | The most you can lose on a lay bet. | Liability = stake × (odds − 1). Check it before confirming. |
| Exposure | The total amount reserved against your open bets. | It is held from your available balance until settlement. |
| Commission | A small charge that may apply to net winnings on a market. | Your displayed profit may be before commission. |
| Unmatched bet | A bet waiting for another player to take the other side. | It can be cancelled before it is matched. |
Back and lay: a worked example
Say India are playing Australia and the exchange shows India at odds of 2.50.
Back: you back India for ₹1,000 at 2.50. If India win, your profit is ₹1,000 × (2.50 − 1) = ₹1,500. If India lose, you lose your ₹1,000 stake.
Lay: you lay India for ₹1,000 at 2.50. If India lose, you win the ₹1,000 stake. If India win, you pay ₹1,000 × (2.50 − 1) = ₹1,500. That ₹1,500 is your liability and is reserved from your balance when the bet is matched.
Trading: if you backed India at 2.50 and their odds fall to 1.80 after a strong start, you can lay at the lower price to lock in a profit whatever the result. This is why many players prefer a Mahakal Exchange ID for live cricket.
